The Way of Compassion
Sometimes, in the rush of daily tasks – cleaning another litter box or filling food bowls for hungry pups – it’s easy to lose sight of the significant work we’re doing. But let’s take a step back, because what we are part of in the Bow Valley is nothing short of revolutionary.
We aren’t just caring for animals at the Bow Valley SPCA. We are redefining animal welfare on a global scale, and the world is watching.
Recently, we had the distinct honor of hosting a delegation from South Korea – 16 leaders, including business innovators, city councillors, and the head of a large-scale animal shelter. They didn’t travel halfway across the globe just for a vacation; they came because they recognize the power of innovation in animal care. Their forward-thinking approach to animal welfare, backed by new government funding to establish a new welfare-friendly shelter in their own region, brought them to our doors. They came to learn from us – Canada’s first no-cage, no-kill shelter – about how we are transforming the lives of homeless animals.
We were delighted to share our journey with them. Our conversations were filled with energy, as we discussed our philosophy; that every animal deserves compassion, dignity, and a chance at a loving home. We explained how removing cages reduces stress, encourages socialization, and creates a more nurturing environment. We shared how prioritizing life – instead of euthanizing healthy and treatable animals – has pushed us to find innovative solutions for even the most challenging cases. And we proudly shared the results, with more than 723 dogs and 1,636 cats finding their forever homes since we opened our doors in 2007.
The South Korean delegation left with new ideas and renewed inspiration. Their eagerness to adopt progressive practices in their own country is a testament to the global momentum we are helping to create. We commend them for their vision, their willingness to embrace new methods, and their dedication to improving the lives of animals in South Korea.
It’s moments like these that remind us why we do what we do – and how important our work truly is. The Bow Valley SPCA is more than just a shelter. We are blazing a trail, setting an example for others to follow, and helping to shape a kinder, more compassionate world for animals everywhere.
But we don’t do any of this alone! Every day, the extraordinary work of our staff, Board of Directors, and our more than 150 volunteers – combined with the overwhelming support from the Bow Valley community – makes it all possible. Without the generosity of time and heart, none of this would be achievable. You are the true pioneers in this mission, helping us push the boundaries of what a shelter can be.
Whether you’re volunteering at the shelter, helping with adoptions, or simply being a compassionate supporter in our community, you are part of a movement that is reshaping how animals are treated – not just in Canada, but around the world. You are making a difference.
You are part of the reason why leaders from across the globe are turning to us for guidance, inspiration, and hope.
So, to our volunteers, donors, and every single member of our community: thank you. Let’s continue to show the world that a no-cage, no-kill future is not just a dream – it’s a reality that we are building together to help animals thrive, right here in the Bow Valley.
With deepest gratitude,
The Bow Valley SPCA
