Canmore Scouts Apply Be Prepared to Their work with the Bow Valley SPCA
Tue, 1 Dec 2015
Canmore Scouts visited the dog and cat residents at the Bow Valley SPCA, Wednesday Nov 26. Meeting the dogs, the Scouts learned the importance of Basic Manners which all BVSPCA dogs are taught by our trained volunteers.
Playing with the cats and kittens was a lesson in how each animal has it's own personality and they learned that at the BVSPCA each animal is treated as an individual by staff and volunteers.
The Scouts started a new project using their motto: Be Prepared. They created a Pet Care and Responsibility info sheet for adopters sugggesting the following:
- Make sure cat is in a crate, dog in a seat belt when traveling
- One person should slowly introduce the new pet to the home, and family members, showing where their bed, water and food will be.
- Show the where the cat kitty litter is
- Take the dog out often for toilet breaks
- Be consistent. everyone in the home should use the same cues.
- If your pet exhibits inappropriate behaviour ignore it, the reward the wanted/expected behaviour
- Have fun, be engaged and give your animal time to adjust.
