About Gunner

Hey there, I'm Gunner, a Rottweiler/Irish Wolfhound Mix! If you're looking for a dog that's loving, loyal, and gentle, I might just be your guy! As a pup, I was in a bad situation, but some very kind folks took myself and my littermates under their wing, and got us back on the right track. Most of my littermates found homes, but I had been staying with the people that rescued me for quite some time. During that time, I was mostly an outdoor dog, although I would come inside to spend time with the family. Because of my upbringing, I hadn't had much exposure to the great big world outside their property, and so I arrived to the BVSPCA as a timid, nervous and undersocialized boy. I may be a big dog weighing in just shy of 100 pounds, but I'm a bit of a baby! Despite finding myself in a new and scary environment, I tried really hard to be brave, and soon learned that the kind people at the shelter give great belly rubs, and we get to go on lots of nice walks and start exploring the world.

Now 6 months later, I'm a sociable, happy, snuggly, and playful boy who gets braver by the day! Because I'd had a sheltered upbringing, my new home will still need to be patient and ready to encourage me with lots of positive reinforcement while I learn more about the world. Despite my size, I walk VERY nice on leash, have great recall, and am a gentle soul. Really, I'm just the perfect gentleman. Living outdoors I got used to protecting my property and my family from other dogs, so any introductions to new dogs will need to be slow and controlled. I've made lots of dog friends at the shelter, but I meet the odd dog I don't get along with, so dog parks might not be for me right away. I used to live with cats, but I do have prey drive with squirrels and birds, so introductions to cats in the home should be slow to keep everyone safe. I haven't had the opportunity to be around very young kids. I think kids that are noisy and high energy might be too much for me, but patient older kids would probably be okay. I used to be nervous of men, but in the past few months I've become a lover of every person I meet, so I shouldn't have any troubles fitting into the family!

With everything I've been through, I'm ready for a home that respects me, loves me, is patient with me, and is ready to show me all the great things that the world has to offer. In return, I'll be your best friend and loyal sidekick!
